Indiana Jones Training

It's actually almost Christmas. But there was still one more challenge this year. A movie team needed my support. Again, it was about Indiana Jones. The new game for PC and consoles “The Great Circle”, which was released in December, made the hearts of many fans beat faster. So did the directors who wanted to make a short film about Indiana Jones. The actors, the whip and the entire script were there. Only one question remained. How do you handle a whip? That became my task. So into the car and off to Stuttgart. After ten hours in constant rain and with a lot of traffic jams, I finally arrived.

The next morning was the start. The team had rented a gym in a large fitness center. That was a good decision, as it soon turned out. After the actor and the film crew arrived, we first discussed the script. Half a day is a damn short time. We picked out the movements that were to be portrayed in the action scenes. Then we got started. There was an additional challenge. We train with whips that are two meters long. Indiana Jones, however, performs with whips that are twice as long. But I was prepared. Claudia had built me a four-meter whip as a precaution and, as always, very professionally. I had already tried it out briefly at home. Now came the test.

We started with the short whip to get a feel for the movement. The whole team wanted to try out the whip. The new Indy was very talented and quickly got to grips with his special role. As he has martial arts experience, we were also able to work quickly. Once the handling was reasonably clear, we switched to the long whip. This is a completely different matter. Every movement takes a lot more time and also a lot more strength. The movie whip looked very true to the original. However, the kangaroo leather proved to be quite stiff. You had to give it your all to get a crack out of it. But Indy had plenty of upper arms and even more motivation to pull it off.

After basic fight scenes, we also covered the classics from the movies. For example, using a whip as a rope after it has become entangled somewhere. It's not as easy as it looks in the movies. But there's plenty of equipment in a gym where you can try it out. Whipping a pistol out of your hand also had to be part of a scene. We practiced this on a wooden stand before moving on to the living object. Indy mastered everything with a lot of fighting spirit and stamina. In the end, we were very pleased with what we had achieved in the time available. We also made a few sound recordings, as the acoustics in a gym are excellent for a whip. After all, a movie should sound good.

I had the impression that they were filming and photographing the whole time. That was certainly very clever to capture all the movements in detail so that they could be repeated more easily. They were real professionals with whom I was allowed to work. The time passed far too quickly, even for me. The movie is due to be shot next year. I'm sure it will be great. I'm already very excited. Thank you very much for the collaboration. Maybe it wasn't the last time we worked together. After all, there are many films with fight scenes that need to be designed. I'd be happy to do it again.
